Key Gas Pipeline Complete, Long-Held Vision of Eastern Gas Network Realized

NEHBANDAN (IGEDC) - Iran has taken a significant step toward enhancing its national gas network with the completion of the "Doshe Dastak - Nehbandan" gas pipeline, fulfilling a longstanding ambition to complete the eastern ring of the country’s gas transmission network.
The 176-kilometer pipeline, which was constructed in just one year by the Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company (IGEDC), marks a historic achievement in the country's energy infrastructure. The official inauguration ceremony took place today in Nehbandan, attended by Majid Chegeni, Deputy Petroleum Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, Reza Noshadi, CEO of IGEDC, and other provincial officials.
Addressing Gas Imbalances and Ensuring Stability in South Khorasan
Majid Alipouri, Project Manager of the 7th and 11th Iran Gas Trunklines (IGATs -7 and -11) at IGEDC, explained the necessity of the project.
He noted that South Khorasan, which relied on the 48-inch North-Northeast pipeline and the Khangiran Sarakhs refinery, had experienced gas pressure drops during peak winter demand due to its distance from the supply source. This led to gas shortages in the region.
"The severe cold in eastern Iran and the recurring gas shortages in South Khorasan made it imperative to develop a solution," said Alipouri. "In the winter of 2022, the National Iranian Gas Company decided to resolve the issue of gas pressure drops in the eastern network once and for all."
The emergency project, with a 72 trillion rials ($1.7 billion) investment, saw rapid progress, with all necessary procedures—such as selecting consultants, conducting preliminary designs, preparing tender documents, and selecting contractors—completed within just six weeks. The project itself began before the end of the year, setting a national record for its speed of implementation.
Flexible Gas Supply Between Provinces
The "Doshe Dastak - Nehbandan" pipeline, which begins in Zabol, Sistan and Baluchestan, and extends 176 kilometers to Nehbandan in South Khorasan, now provides a new gas supply route for the region.
Alipouri highlighted the flexibility of the system, which allows gas to flow in either direction between the two provinces, ensuring that gas needs can be met even if one region experiences pressure drops.
Looking ahead, Alipouri announced the imminent launch of the Nehbandan-Sarbisheh gas pipeline project, a 124-kilometer, 36-inch line that will further complete the eastern ring of Iran's gas network.
Once finished, this pipeline will connect IGAT-7 to the 48-inch North-Northeast pipeline, significantly enhancing the stability and reliability of gas supply in the eastern regions.
